LUXURY TRAVEL - IRELAND MOUNT JULIET HOTEL AND GOLF RESORT
Luxurious Manor House Estate in Kilkenny Mount Juliet is one
of Ireland's most impressive country estates and one of the most luxurious
hotels
in the Kilkenny area. Condé Nast
Travelers rated Mount Juliet in the top 25 of European Resorts in 2009.
The 18th Century manor at the center of Mount Juliet overlooking the
River Nore was built by the Earl of Carrick in 1757, and named to honor
his wife, Lady Juliana, nicknamed Juliet. The lands of the Mount Juliet
Estate once belonged to the monks of the nearby medieval Jerpoint Abbey
monastery (see Jerpoint
Abbey) until the Henry VII suppressed the Catholic
monasteries in 1541. The family moved into the mansion from Ballyinch
Castle on the estate grounds, now mostly torn down. The Earls of Carrick
remained in Mount Juliet until 1914, when they sold the estate to the
McCalmont family. The manor and estate was transformed into a luxury
hotel and golf resort in 1989. Mount
Juliet Manor is an architectural beauty offering 5 star personal service.
The classical doorway of the ivy cloaked main house leads to an impressive
entrance hall of eighteenth century craftsmanship. The original form
of the house remains nearly unchanged for 200 years. The details of the
hall are complemented by a large mural which celebrates the equestrian
heritage and tradition of the estate and the surrounding countryside.
The paneled walls of the Tetrarch Bar recall a glorious equestrian past.
The casual decor of the Major's Room and the Morning Room are enhanced
by a sparkling collection of antiques and china behind the glass case
doors. Staying at Mount Juliet in the manor house feels more like an elegant
private family home rather than hotel. The hotel has 31 luxurious and
spacious bedrooms, each individually designed and furnished to maintain
the homelike feel, many of which look out to the paddocks of Ballylinch
Stud Farm which takes up a portion of the estate across the River Nore
which cuts through the grounds. The manor house rooms, along with two
presidential suits are named for historic figures, drawing inspiration
from the history of the estate and the lore of the Kilkenny.
.
The
Mount Juliet Hotel is surrounded by woodland walks around the estate
lands, historical sights like the Jerpoint Abbey and the castle (see
Kilkenny
Castle) and craft trail of Kilkenny, and features
an amazing
array of activities to while away the time in county land gentry style,
with some of the best fishing in Ireland on the River Nore, award winning
championship
golf
on the Jack Nicklaus signature course, pampering spa, tennis, year round
indoor pool and outdoor clay pigeon shooting and archery.
Equestrian Center
The Mount Juliet Equestrian center is one of the most impressive public
equine centers in Ireland. The facilities include two arenas – an
International size arena, an American style barn, and exhilarating cross-country
course - horse riding classes, beginning to expert, and to trail riding
with 18 miles of woodland bridle paths. As the Kilkenny Foxhounds are
kenneled on the estate, there is even the opportunity for traditional
fox hunting, if such strikes your fancy. Golf For
avid golfers and even those only casually attracted to the game will
find the putting
green
at Mount Juliet a treat. Just a short walk
from the front door, the unique putting green of 18 holes, is like a
true championship golf course in miniature, icliding water and bridges.
The resort’s
signature main championship course, the only Jack Nicklaus designed course
in Ireland
is often sited as one of the best parklands golf courses in the country.
The course has been played by Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els and Tiger
Woods.
Restaurants The Lady Helen restaurant
in the dining room of the house named for Lady Helen McCalmont is the
grand setting to experience the 2 AA Rosette
Awarded contemporary Irish cuisine and international dishes utilizing
locally grown meats and fish, and fresh herbs from the estate’s
own herb garden. Sit by the paneled window for a view over the estate
and the River Nore, or select a table by the Georgian fireplace. For
more casual dining the Kendals Restaurant offers French brasserie classic
in more relaxed atmosphere. Spa The Spa at Mount Juliet has been voted one of the 5 best in Ireland
offering the perfect escape from the stresses of modern living. The Spa
