HOTEL INTERCONTINENTAL HAMBURG
Diplomatic Luxury on the Alster
The Hotel Intercontinental
was the site of my first stay in Hamburg, so I may have a personal
bias born of nostalgia. It was the week that
Princess Diana was killed in Paris. Hamburg’s Hotel Intercontenental
is located in the city’s upscale residential neighborhood on the
upper Alster Lake and about a block from the British and American Consulates.
Flowers had nearly covered the gates and fences of the mansion where
Britain’s diplomatic mission resided. A memory hard to forget.
The proximiity of embassies is no accident. The Intercontinental Hotels & Resorts
group began life following the route of the Pan American Airways “Clipper” service
after WWII, building unique individual hotels in international capitals
to host dignitaries and exclusive travelers, princes and presidents,
the first truly international hotel brand in the world. Hotels in the
chain include famous symbols of luxury accomodation like the Mark Hopkins
in San Francisco and The Barclay in New York and The Willard Hotel in
Washington, D.C..
The
Hotel Intercontinental in Hamburg is a modern style 9 story five star
luxury hotel, completely
renovated in 2002 surrounded by trees abd greenery on the upper lake
of the city. Hamburg’s
main business district and Congress Centre are an easy walk and other
must
sees of the cosmopolitan city on the Elbe River, St Michael’s Church,
the St. Pauli district and fish market, by underground. The hotel’s
281 rooms are spacious and airy, while suites provide balconies with
a breathtaking view of Hamburg and the Alster designed for a bright and
comfortable atmosphere, divided into a luxurious bedroom and elegant
living room. Each room has its own marble bathroom with luxury amenities.
The Daylight Spa with Finish saunas, massage, adventure experience showers
and indoor pool offer relaxation in the wellness center for €15
per day. Traditional English style afternoon tea is served in the lobby
Fontenay 10 Bar, with live piano music in the evenings.
A sumptuous breakfast buffet is served in the Signatures restaurant with
an outside terrace. In the evening, choose between Signatures and Windows
gourmet restaurant for dinner. The Windows Restaurant is at the top of
the hotel on the 9th floor with beautiful views of the Alster Lake lined
at night by the lights of Hamburg. Four private dining rooms are available.
Also on the 9th Floor the Chesterfield Cigar Lounge, named for the deep
cushions English chairs, offers cocktails and a prime selection of cigars
in a relaxed atmosphere in front of the open fireplace or on the balcony
watching over the lake and downtown. The Chesterfield is also the only
spot in the hotel where smoking is allowed.
The hotel offers some special Hamburg Sightseeing Packages. “Views
of Hamburg” provides a nighttime excursion to the iconic Michael’s
Church, the city’s symbol with spectacular views of the city and
harbor. “Hamburg Underground” offers and guided tour of the
Steintor Walls underground WWII bunkers, where the city’s leaders
rode out the massive allied bombings which turned large swaths of Hamburg
to rubble. Packages include accommodations, transportation, breakfast
and a Hamburg CARD © Bargain
