LUXURY TRAVEL - ENGLAND THE
GROVE – LONDON’S
COUNTRY ESTATE
Deluxe Hotel and Gardens - Golf & Spa
In the old England days of bonnets and hoops skirts, waistcoats and four-in-hands,
the lords and ladies of London society would gather the servants and
carriages to depart the grotty air of the city and head out for a weekend
in the country. Surrounded by trees and fields of green, they would still
enjoy the luxuries of their accustomed privileged life. The titles are
gone, but the weekend escape to the countryside, pampered in luxury with
every need cared for still exists. The Grove: London’s Country
Estate Hotel and Gardens lies about 40 minutes from central London just
inside the M25 loop autoroute, the Grove, voted the UK’s Favorite
Leasure Hotel by Conde Nast Traveller readers is indeed a unique and
relaxing getaway from the city bustle. Set on 300 acres of the former
estate of the Earls of Clarenden, The Grove offers a 5 Star luxury hotel
experience with a relaxed casual atmosphere.
The Grove estate has seen its share of history, first as a country manor
house under a series of owners, then during WWII as the headquarters
of the London, Midland & Scottish railway, which moved out of town
to escape the blitz. The war era bomb shelters still survive on the grounds.
The house fell into disrepair until being renovated into a deluxe hotel
property. The manor house is an 18th Century Palladian mansion housing
a number of rooms and suites, while a more modern west wing adds more
guestrooms. The
designers of The Grove chose to create a fusion of contemporary and
antique in a “groovy grand” style. Inside the mansion
one steps from the elevator into a hallway of blackout curtains, almost
as if in an air-raid shelter, but entering the suites and rooms filled
with light through many windows and views of the lush extensive grounds
in every direction. Perhaps most defining of The Grove is the beauty
of the surrounding grounds and the sheer amount of activities and entertainments
to keep
one occupied
with an escape from the mundane. The
Championship Golf Course at the Grove has hosted world champions, but
prides itself on its walk up
and play policy, relaxed and casual, with clubs and gear for rent
so one
needn’t haul bags through airports to enjoy a round of golf.
Several gardens of herbs and flowers are laid out around the grounds.
The 3 acre
Walled Garden added to the estate by Edward Hyde, the 5th Earl of
Clarenden (and not the alter ego of Dr. Jykell), has been transformed
into a
leisure center with tennis courts, indoor and outdoor swimming pool
and even
its own artificial cabana beach, The Beach at the Grove for sunning
and sand in the toes, with billiards and table tennis in the old
garden house.
The Sequoia Spa offers a chance to leave behind the tensions of the
modern world with a variety of treatment styles, including ESPA Ayurvedic
treatments
and a VIP couple suites. Running directly through the grounds of
The Grove, the Grand Union Canal offers the opportunity for a canal
boat
excursion which can be arranged through the concierge on special
request, or just vicariously enjoy the boats navigating the historic
waterway.
To keep children happy and occupied, the Grove has the Anouskas Kids
Club with a full day’s worth of activities. Explore around
the estate to find a few of the hidden secrets, the nearly camouflaged
old air raid shelters now home to bats and the burial monuments of
the Clarenden
Earls hidden among the trees and scattered leaves.
The
Grove has three excellent restaurants. Colette’s is the
Grove's three rosette award winning restaurant of modern cuisine with
a
classic twist in in the mansions restored 18th Century dining room.
The Glass
House a bit more casual with cooks in an open kitchen cooking a
variety of food styles from grill to wok, served buffet style, very
popular with
locals as well as guests, and The Stables in the former stable
block with views overlooking the golf course. Due to the popularity,
the Grove
recommends making restaurant and spa reservations at the same time
as booking the hotel reservations. The
Grove Hotel and Gardens Country Estate on of the World's Leading Hotels
group offers a number of special packages for different seasons, spa
and dining
packages,
golf
and family escapes. The Grove at Chandler's Cross near Watford
in Hertfordshire is
15 minutes
from
London’s
outlying Luton Airport and 25 minutes from Stansted and 45 minutes
from Heathrow. Watford Junction train station is served by British
Rail and
Virgin Rail. © Bargain
