GLENLO ABBEY
HOTEL - GALWAY
West Ireland's Luxury Golf Hotel & Resort
The
Glenlo Abbey Hotel has been host to at least one U.S. First Lady. Just
north of
Galway at
the gateway to the bucolic picturesque glens
of the Connemara region, the Glenlo Abbey Hotel offers 48 bedrooms and
suites in a former grand manor of the ancestral estate of the Ffrench
Family, one of Galways famous "tribes". Built in 1740 with its own
attached chapel, “the
Abbey” The estate went through a few owners until the Bourke family
renovated the property and turned it into Galway's only 5 star hotel
opening to guests in 1992. The Glenlo Abbey Hotel is in a quiet setting
in the upscale Galway suburb
of Bushypark,
surrounded
by
its
private
golf
course
which
overlooks the Lough Corrib lake, with the vibrancy of Galway ten minutes
away and centrally located for exploring the west of Ireland, with the
Cliffs of Moher to the Croagh Patrick, Ireland’s holy mountain
locally known as the “Reek”and legenday Galway Bay within
easy day trip reach.
First opened as a hotel in 1992 the Glenlo Abbey Hotel has been awarded
with a prestigious RAC Gold Ribbon award, presenting five star elegance
with more four star prices and a relaxed atmosphere. Relaxing in the
manor’s library is like a return to the grand Edwardian era. The
Glenlo Abbey Hotel is home to one of Ireland’s most noted and unique
restaurants - The Pullman Restaurant - created from a brace of former
Orient Express Pullman Rail Coaches set behind the hotel manor house
at the edge of the golf greens. The main dining car was formerly a first
class Parlour Car with rich wood décor of its bygone era. The
menu on the Pullman Restaurant reflects a sample of the destinations
of the world famous Orient Express. It is only open on weekends and reservations
are definitely recommended. The River Room Restaurant in the hotel offers
award winning cuisine in an elegant old world setting and the Oak Cellar
Bar below floors offers a chance to mix with locals who regularly come
to watch sporting events over a pint in the warm cozy environment, out
of the sometimes challenging West Irish Coast weather.
The hotel is popular for weddings and offers several options from the
Pavilion Room to the Abbey, (secular events only) and the Pullman Restaurant.
The Abbey was a private chapel built very close to the main house because
the manor’s owner was an invalid, accessed through a closed walkway
entrance. The Abbey construction was started in 1790 but was never completed
and the chapel was not consecrated as a church. The hotel can be used
as a base for hunting and fishing in the unspoiled wilds of Connemara
famed for its use as a typically Irish background for the John Wayne
film “The Quiet Man”.
