CARLTON HOTEL ST MORITZ
All Luxury 5 Star Suites and Your Own Butler in the Swiss Engadine

Imagine arriving in a mountain resort wonderland. The Mercedes limousine with your driver picks you up with your luggage after having traveled through the magnificent snow covered peaks of the high Swiss Alps. You are whisked to the impressive grand historic hotel which stands majestically in the sparkling sun on the hillside above. Guided to a beautiful hotel suite where your personal butler (maybe even Sabrina) is prepared to serve, and a personal business card with the hotel's address and your name is already waiting for you in its leather folder case. You look out over the lake and mountains as the sun sets on the stunning landscape that has been renowned as one on the worlds great resort destinations for over 100 years. This is the Carlton of St. Moritz.

Carlton Hotel Sankt Moritz Snow photoSt Moritz is synonymous with the luxurious lifestyle. Known mostly as a winter playland for the jet set of Europe and crown princes of far away lands, sunlight over the Alps peaks sparkle on the lake over 300 days a year, making for crisp days and glowing sunsets. One of the best views is a balcony of the Five Star Carlton Hotel of St. Moritz, one of the Leading Small Hotels of the World group. A classic landmark, standing majestically on the hillside high above the lake and the St Moritz railway station, the Carlton’s first years were part of the color and lore of Sankt Moritz. The doors of the iconic building were first opened in 1913, just a year before the outbreak of World War One. View Balcony Suite photoLegend has it the property was originally intended as a summer residence for Russian Czar Nicholas II, but the legend may have been only a rumor started by its owner as a piece of PR. Even though the Russian family never lived there, the Carlton was a royal residence all through the First World War when the royal family of Greece hide out in exile for the full course of the war in the halls of the hotel. In the 1930’s the Carlton gained its reputation as a destination of the celebrities of Europe come to ride on the then newly designated Glacier Express from Zermatt to St. Moritz which still arrives and departs daily and play polo on the ice of the frozen lake in winter glory.

Carlton Hotel Spa Pool photoThe Carlton St Moritz underwent an 18 month complete renovation, modernized and re-imagined, reopened in winter of 2007 as a luxury all-suites hotel. Swiss born designer Carlo Rampazzi utilzed the legend of the Czar as an influence in his redesign of the hotel, creating a resort destination of contemporary, cosmopolitan elegance with a historical flare. The rooms at the Carlton have been created as all suites, ranging from junior to grand royal, most with balconies and views of the lake and Alps beyond the heart of St. Moritz. A noted feature of the service at the Carlton, your own butler, on call for your needs. In winter ski rental and a ski school are located on the property. The Carlton has the only outdoor pool in St. Moritz as well as the indoor spa pool. The Carlton Spa has been selected as a Leading Spa of the World for its world class facilities, three floors of spa suites with mountain views offering a ladies only sauna and a Finnish sauna, hydromassage and ice fountain. The heated pool under covered deack surrounded by winter snow presents the best of both worlds. Personalized body treatments from Aroma Scrubs to Indian Ayurvedics are available from an extensive menu of pampering specialties.

Carlton Hotel Limousine photoThe Russian royal theme plays out in the Romanoff gourmet fine dining restaurant under chef Alexander Kroll and the Tschine with Asian influenced casual dining. Limousine or helicopter transfers can be arranged. The hotel bar of deep rich wood, spacious lobby and grand stairway remaining from the original structure of the hotel provide a relaxed remembrance of times past. Rates at the Carlton range from 500 Swiss Francs in the shoulder season to upwards of 3,000 for the top end grand suites in high season. Should you not have the personal budget of a Russian Tsar but have a taste for the lifestyle of a Greek prince, try the Carlton in the off season when you can get three nights for 50% off. Or for a unique treat ask about the Classic Car package in fall or spring, which includes a two night stay in a Junior Suite, dinner and breakfast and a Mercedes SL for touring the countryside. In February, the Carlton Hotel hosts the opening cocktail of the annual St. Moritz Gourmet Festival. Special events are held at the hotel through the year. Spend Oktoberfest in the Swiss Alps at the Carlton Bar, take wine classes with Sommelier Gianfranco Ambrosio, cooking classes or Mushroom hunting with Chef Kroll, or even a Butler Class - should you want to learn the proper way to iron a newspaper. © Bargain Luxury Travel
