The
country manor style luxury hotel of BrookLodge opened in 1999 as
new home for the
Strawberry Tree
Restaurant. Chef Evan Doyle pioneered
organic artisan cooking in Ireland long before “green” was
fashionable, and took advantage of an opportunity to move his popular
restaurant from its location in Killarney. With his two brothers, Evan
opened the Brooklodge in tiny Macreddin, a classic Irish village which
was on its way to a slow vanishing act. With the arrival of a luxury
hotel with championship golf course and renowned restaurant, the village
is now a food destination all its own, a short drive from the ancient
stones of monastic Glendalough, Powerscourt Gardens, and the mills
of Avoca.
Strawberry Tree Restaurant
In
1999, together with his two brothers, Evan opened The BrookLodge Hotel
in Macreddin
Village,
Co. Wicklow and it is here that The Strawberry
Tree, under the guidance of Evan, has continued to develop as one of
Ireland’s showcases for artisan and locally produced organic foods.
The Strawberry Tree is Ireland’s only certified organic restaurant
and winner of Food & Wine Magazine’s Best Restaurant of Leinster
award. The BrookLodge even sources and purifies its own spring water. At
the Strawberry Tree, with one of Ireland’s most dramatic dining
rooms, Evan Doyle offers the Big Table experience. Enjoy a five course
sumptuous organic meal for two in a romantic corner of one of Ireland
most dramatic dining rooms. Or with a group, a feast menu for friends,
family or a business gathering, where the food arrives together in feast
style, presented on platters for guests to pick and choose. Americans
will feel the reminiscence of Thanksgiving, while others will recall
their own home spun holidays, but of gourmet perfectly prepared and organically
grown artisan food. The produce and meat products for the Strawberry
Tree are grown on local organic farms in a unique personal arrangement
between kitchen and supplier, with much of the product being grown on
the Gold River Farm just down the road.
Dining
A collection of other dining experiences are available in the Macreddin Village, Acton’s Country Pub and Brewery makes its own lager and stout in an on premises microbrewery. The Orchard Café is a casual setting for light lunch of free range organic and wild foods. The La Taverna Armento is another restaurant in the village featuring a Southern Italian menu, based on the magnificent foods available from the countryside surrounding the Village of Armento in the Basilicata province.
Wells Spa & Macreddin Golf
For
the ultimate luxurious pampering, step into the Wells Spa for a relaxing
day with
a difference. The highly trained staff of therapists offer a range
of treatments in the sumptuous surroundings with sparkling indoor-outdoor
grotto pool, Alongside prestige treatments is a Hammam Massage Room,
Flotation Room, heated Relaxation Loungers, Mud Chamber and Aroma
Steam Room. The
Macreddin Golf Club features an 18 hole championship course designed
by Irish Ryder
Cup champion Paul McGinley. Horse Riding at Macreddin
Stables is set in the midst of the truly special Wicklow Valley, with
trekking
and cross-county rides through the unspoiled woodlands of the Wicklow
countryside as well as riding lessons and a all-weather jumping
arena. Also clay pigeon shooting, archery and off-road driving packages
can be arranged. Bicycles can be rented at the hotel for biking the green
hills and valleys, or just stroll the grounds across the village green
from the BrookLodge is a wonderful old stone bridge over Ballycreen Brook
