Enchanting Irish Country Manor Escape
The sumptuous Cabra Castle Hotel, set in the serene countryside of County Cavan, Ireland, in the little village of Kingscourt, stands as an image of history and elegance. This 4-star luxury castle manor house accommodation, a member of Original Irish Hotels, offers an enchanting experience with a rich heritage, fascinating architecture, and modern amenities.
The origins of Cabra Castle trace back to the 18th Century when the land housed an ancient round tower castle, originally known as Cormey Castle. Although the main structure had fallen into ruins due to the ravages of the Cromwellian War, the adjacent courtyard remained intact. In 1808, the Foster Family embarked on the task of rebuilding the castle; but the ambitious project led them to financial ruin. The Pratt Family took ownership in 1813, renaming it Cabra Castle.
Fast forward to the present day, the Corscadden Family, well known hoteliers. The building underwent extensive refurbishments and expansions, including the incorporation of the former Courtyard and Gate Lodge, as well as the construction of six charming cottages on the estate, bringing the total number of bedrooms to 105, making it very popular for destination weddings and events.
Immersed in Elegance and Comfort
Cabra Castle captures the essence of historical charm presenting the image of a crenelated Norman keep, complete with turrets, battlements, an imposing façade which transports visitors to a bygone era. The interior, feels more like a Victorian manor its period features and furnishings, and exudes an authentic old-world charm with a few pictures of the family to give it a homey feel.
The hotel offers an array of luxurious accommodation options, from medieval-style castle rooms featuring four-poster beds to artisan-style Courtyard rooms with stone walls and garden views. For those seeking a more budget-conscious choice, the cottage rooms offer a simpler yet comfortable experience. Getting from the main manor to the rooms is a bit of a maze of up and down stairs and corridors lined with paintings and art, allowing a rather intimate secret feel.
Culinary Delights and Unforgettable Experiences
The Courtroom Restaurant, located on the first floor with a commanding view of the gardens and parkland, offers an award-winning menu featuring the best of Irish cuisine, crafted from locally-sourced and seasonal ingredients. The restaurant's elegant and intimate ambiance, coupled with panoramic views of the gardens, enhances the dining experience. The Cabra Castle Bar caters to lighter dining options throughout the day, providing a cozy setting to savor culinary favorites and traditional Irish beverages, or catch a sports match on the big screen TV.
This was my first night in Ireland on this trip so for my dinner I had a traditional Beef and Guinness Irish Stew in the bar restaurant. Breakfast would be in the Courtyard Restaurant with sunny morning views of the grounds.
The hotel's offerings extend beyond dining. Guests can engage in a variety of activities. The 9-hole golf course listed in some references is no longer available, but exploring the countryside on horseback is an option. I stayed at the Craba Castle for a visit to the amazing Game of Thrones Studio Tour, about 35 minutes away. For those seeking relaxation, the onsite spa offers a range of treatments and wellness experiences, allowing visitors to rejuvenate their senses.
Hauntings
Cabra Castle like most historic manors is not without its stories of ghosts. Among the most famous is the story of Sarah, a maidservant who was tragically murdered in the 1780s, hung from a tree for getting pregnant. Her ghost is said to still haunt the hotel, with reports of flickering lights, moving objects. These are particularly common the courtyard rooms. I stayed in one, and was not disturbed by any phenomena, except for a brief outage of the tv signal.
