HOTEL SCHLOSS GABELHOFEN
Luxury Castle Hotel in the Murtal Valley of Styria, Austria
The luxurious Hotel and Restaurant Schloss Gabelhofen, set in the beautiful Murtal Region of Styria, Austria, just west of Graz, offers guests a truly special experience in a picturesque setting. The hotel maintains the historic feeling of a moated medieval castle with impressive walls, moat and four towers that feature the hotel’s signature multi-story deluxe suites. Crossing the wooden moat bridge and garden, stepping inside, the hotel reveals a modern and stylish atmosphere, with light flooding in through a glass roof, illuminating the cozy lounges.
On a road trip from Vienna to the Italian Dolomites I was looking for a midway stop and the Schloss Hotel Gabelhofen seemed the perfect spot, and being a racing enthusiast offered some additional inspiration. Located in the hamlet of Fohnsdorf, just on the outskirts of the charming town of Spielberg, the hotel is only a short drive away from the famous Red Bull Ring race track, making it the perfect choice for motorsports fans looking to catch a race, or ideal for exploring the southern Austrian landscape, with medieval villages and historic abbeys within easy reach, and rich in skiing in winter and hiking in summer.
Schloss Gabelhofen was first mentioned in historical records of 1443 as a planned moated defense castle on the banks of the river Pöls. The soil around the moat was too porous and the moat was abandoned in favor of completing the castle as a Renaissance fortified manor. Over the centuries the castle had many owners, the Pfanngauer, Prankhherren, and Gabelkhovener families, today commemorated as names for dining rooms in the hotel. The last noble owner was Prince Friedrich von und zu Liechtenstein who sold the entire property and after WWI.
The Schloss Hotel Gabelhofen's proximity to the Red Bull Ring is one of its main draws, as it is just a short drive away from the track, making it easy for guests to catch a race or take a tour of the track facilities. As the hotel itself is owned by the same company, Tauroa, that owns the track, you might run into some race figures hanging around. Track tours and driving experiences can be arranged through the hotel. Two thermal spas are nearby, the Gesundheitstherme Wildbad was first mentioned in 1500, and the Therme Aqualux.
The Schloss Hotel Gabelhofen boasts a range of luxurious amenities, including spacious guest rooms and suites within the remodeled castle, decorated with a comfortable mix of modern and antique furnishings, with modern amenities including as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and mini-bar. The four corner tower rooms are the most sumptuous suites with dramatic upper and lower spaces with outdoor garden entrances. Guests can also enjoy the hotel's on-site spa, which offers a range of relaxing treatments and massages. For those looking to stay active, the hotel has a fitness center and an indoor pool.
