The 4-star Hotel
Schwärzler in Bregenz, is a modern, small boutique family run
city hotel situated just at the edge of where the urban center meets
the
surrounding
woodlands, at the foot of the Gebhardsberg Mountain. Easy access from
the Bregenz-Weidbach motorway between Austria and Germany, makes the
Hotel Schwärzler an ideal choice for touring by car from the Black
Forest into Austria. It was on a long exploration trip of the south German
hills of the Black Forest and the Austrian Tyrol that I stopped in Bregenz,
the capital of the Vorarlberg, where Lake Constance, the largest lake
in Europe is bounded by four countries.
The ivy grown exterior disguises a crisp contemporary
design with bright color scheme of contrasting earthy tones with balcony
rooms looking out on greenery rather than city.
Three restaurants
at
the
Hotel Schwärzler offer a choice of dining experiences: the intimate
gourmet Babenwohl Restaurant features delightful Austrian, French and
international cuisine creations of Chef Jochen Maier, whose reputation
reaches beyond the borders of Austria, the main Rieden Restaurant is
also available for large events, and the more casual Stube and the Terrace
Garden are charming. The extensive wine cellar includes some choice wines
from all over the world, but the main emphasis is on high-quality Austrian
wines.The indoor pool, sauna and steam bath are free for guests, with
massage, Solarium and beauty treatments by appointment.
The Schwarzler Hotel is not far from the Bregenz Railway Station, and
the Lake Constance harbor cruise dock, but requiring a city bus or taxi
with luggage. The old town is about a 10 to 15 minute walk from the hotel
door, and city busses stop in front. The hotel is surrounded by trails
for jogging, hiking or biking and the Gebhardsberg
castle restaurant,
visible on the hillside above the hotel is a modest hike up the mountain
trail. The Schwärzler is a popular business hotel and the informal
ambiance in the bar makes for a meeting place to gather for a drink and
exchange
