ARMURES The Hotel Les Armures is a unique and historic small boutique 5-Star hotel in the heart of old town Geneva, which rather deceptive from the outside, has hosted three U.S. Presidents as guests as well other world dignitaries. Just around the corner from the St Pierre Cathedral and a short walk to the shore of Lake Geneva, the Hotel Les Armures is ideally situated for a tourist or business visit to Geneva. The building dates back to the 13th Century, with foundations connected to the monastic chapter house of the cathedral but the hotel consists primarily of a personal family residence from the 17th Century. The Hotel Les Artmures is the most intimate of Geneva’s 5-star luxury hotels, offering its guests attentive, refined service and a unique historic atmosphere, with charming rooms of modern design in a classic environment and fine gourmet cuisine. The 32 guest rooms and junior suites are all air-conditioned and lavishly furnished, with marble bathrooms, thick bathrobes and the latest technology including free wireless internet access and flat screen TVs. All the rooms feature open beam painted ceilings, fireplaces and stone window treatments, with some rooms in classic style and some redesigned with a modern, contemporary style, but in keeping the historic character of the former aristocratic residence. The rooms of the hotel are is composed of four combined medieval buildings built onto the foundations of the old cathedral chapter house wall next to the Caralèses Gate of the old city from the 1200’s. The building was renovated several times over the next 400 years but on several occasions, but the present form dates from about 1685, when the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, caused French Hugenot Protestants to seek refuge in Geneva to escape persecution. To house the influx, many buildings in Geneva were reconstructed to add an extra floor; and the house of the Les Armures Hotel show evidence of this with its little windows seen under the eaves.The building belonged through its history to the Counts and Bishops of Geneva. The basements of the Café des Armures were used as wine cellars. After the Reformation the buildings belonged to a series of occupants and eventually joined into one as the house of Samuel Chouet de la Rive who financed the redesign in the Italian style of the late 17th Century. The Café Les Armures is Geneva's oldest coffee house, a city landmark and popular hangout among town residents and old town visitors. The Les Armoures Restaurant, watched over by the signature suit or armor serves classic French international style gourmet cuisine in the Salle des Artistes and the cellar bar, the Carnotzet serves cheese Swiss specialties including Raclette and Fondue. The Cathedral of Saint Pierre, the old Geneva Town Hall and Arsenal, the Reformation Museum and the Museum of Art and History. the Dusquesne House, and the Barbier-Mueller Museum are all nearby.
