The Hotel Les Armures
is a unique and historic small boutique 5-Star hotel in the heart of
old town Geneva, which rather deceptive from the
outside, has hosted three U.S. Presidents as guests as well other world
dignitaries. Just around the corner from the St Pierre Cathedral and
a short walk to the shore of Lake Geneva, the Hotel Les Armures is ideally
situated for a tourist or business visit to Geneva. The building dates
back to the 13th Century, with foundations connected to the monastic
chapter house of the cathedral but the hotel consists primarily of a
personal family residence from the 17th Century.
The Hotel Les Artmures
is the most intimate of Geneva’s 5-star
luxury hotels, offering its guests attentive, refined service and a unique
historic atmosphere, with charming rooms of modern design in a classic
environment and fine gourmet cuisine. The 32 guest rooms and junior suites
are all air-conditioned and lavishly furnished, with marble bathrooms,
thick bathrobes and the latest technology including free wireless internet
access and flat screen TVs. All the rooms feature open beam painted ceilings,
fireplaces and stone window treatments, with some rooms in classic style
and some redesigned with a modern, contemporary style, but in keeping
the historic character of the former aristocratic residence. The rooms
of the hotel are is composed of four combined medieval buildings built
onto the foundations of the old cathedral chapter house wall next
to the Caralèses Gate of the old city from the 1200’s.
The building was renovated several times over the next 400 years but
on several
occasions, but the present form dates from about 1685, when the revocation
of the Edict of Nantes, caused French Hugenot Protestants to seek refuge
in Geneva to escape persecution. To house the influx, many buildings
in Geneva were reconstructed to add an extra floor; and the house of
the Les Armures Hotel show evidence of this with its little windows
seen under the eaves.The
building belonged through its history to the Counts and Bishops
of Geneva. The basements of the Café des Armures were used
as wine cellars. After the Reformation the buildings belonged to
a series
of
occupants and eventually joined into one as the house of Samuel Chouet
de la Rive who financed the redesign in the Italian style of the
late 17th Century.
The
Café Les
Armures is Geneva's oldest coffee house, a city landmark and popular
hangout among town residents
and old town visitors.

serves classic French international style gourmet cuisine in the Salle
des
Artistes and the cellar bar, the Carnotzet serves cheese Swiss
specialties including
Raclette and Fondue. The Cathedral of Saint Pierre, the old Geneva
Town Hall and Arsenal, the Reformation
