THE
SHELBOURNE HOTEL – DUBLIN
Historic 5-Star Style at St Stephen's Green and New Luxury Spa
The Shelbourne has been the fashionable address in Dublin since first opening
its doors in 1824. Now, a Renaissance by Marriot Hotel, the classic city hotel
has been modernized for current deluxe accommodation standards, beautifully
renovated and now the largest 5-star hotel in Dublin. The Shelbourne has been
a favorite haunt of Dubliners and international visitors alike, who come to
savor an authentic afternoon tea, a drink in the Horseshoe Bar, or fine dining
in the steak and seafood restaurant, The Saddle Room. In 2013, this “Grand
Dame” of Dublin’s classic hotels added a new luxury spa, entering
the spa hotel category with three floors of treatment rooms, thermal facilities,
swimming pool, state-of-the-art gym and even a dance studio. A grand hotel
of the golden elegant past with all the modern comforts of world class luxury.
The
Shelbourne Hotel was first opened in 1824 by an ambitious fellow from
Tipperary, Martin
Burke, intent on establishing a hotel in Dublin to ‘woo genteel
custom” for guests at a fashionable address. He leased three houses
at St. Stephen’s Green in the most fashionable part of the city. In
1904, George Olden took on the management of the hotel and in the Edwardian
age from
1906 to 1913, the hotel was the best place to stay in Dublin for the upper
crust, with the futuristic additions of a telephone and an elevator. In 1914
with the outbreak of European war, the Shelbourne saw its share of military
generals. In May of 1922, the hotel played its most important role in history
- the drafting of the Irish Constitution. The “Bunreacht na hÉireann” was
drawn up in room 112, by a committee chaired by Michael Collins. This room
is now called The Constitution Room and an original copy of the document
still can be seen at the hotel. Ninteeen of the suites are named for famous
guests
who have stayed over the years, including Princess Grace of Monaco,
actress Grace Kelly, and President John F. Kennedy, as well as figures of
Irish history, Michael Collins and Eamonn De Valera. The hotel’s story
can be seen in the small museum on the premises.
