has been host to royalty, celebrities and political figures throughout
its history
and has been witness to
major international
historical events. In 1872 a banquet was held at the hotel
to mark the end of the dispute between Great Britain and the United
States
over the
warship CSS Alabama during the American Civil War. The Alabama
was built in secret in Britain for the Confederacy and raided
Union
shipping
taking
64 prizes before being sunk off of the Cherbourg by the USS
Cherbourg. Britain paid the US 15 million in damages as part of a settlement
negotiated in Geneva for violating neutrality in the settlement
of the “Alabama
Claims”. This marked the last wartime conflict between
America and England and also set forward a movement for international
law
