BARGAIN LUXURY TRAVEL - SWITZERLAND PARK
HOTEL WEGGIS - LAKE LUCERNE The American humorist Mark Twain first came to the shores of Lake Lucerne in 1879, writing of his adventures in his travel book, “A Tramp Abroad”, where he described the beauty of the lake and his hike up the side of Mt Rigi, above the village of Weggis. Twain returned to Weggis in the summer of 1897 when he was a good bit wealthier. There is now a monument to Twain along the lake shore under an oak tree where he would go to sit and contemplate. He wrote to a friend “This is the charmingest place we have ever lived for repose and restfulness, superb scenery whose beauty undergoes a perpetual change from one miracle to another”. For much of his two week stay, he rented rooms in the front corner of a large house on the lake shore. That house is now the 5 Star luxury Park Hotel Weggis, and has hosted a number of discerning literary, entertainment and political personalities in the years since. The hotel was first opened in 1875 as the Hotel Bellevue. The main building and “Schlössli” original manor wing are of the Art Nouveau era of the last century, with corner turrets and balconies looking out on the lake. The property was entirely renovated on 2001 with additional enhancements in 2007. The Art Nouveau façade remains of the original building with newer modern rooms section in a cohesive mix of traditional and fresh architectural contrast in the surrounding grounds of a lush green park and interior spaces filled with art. The main building has the Twain Suite of rooms where the famous author once stayed, now very popular for upscale visitors to Weggis. Theer is a suite named for the composer Rachmaninov, and ten exclusive “Adara” suites in the modern addition, along with an outdoor heated pool, its own boat dock, an on-site florist for that sudden romantic urge, and library. With a perfect location right on Lake Lucerne, and Swiss hospitality expected of one of the world’s classic luxury escapes, the Park Hotel Weggis was awarded the Best Hotel of the Year by GaultMillau in 2001 and is a member of Relais & Châteaux and Swiss Deluxe Hotels group. The Park Hotel Weggis offers 52 luxurious rooms and suites, three award winning gourmet restaurants, exquisite spa facilities and even its own wine shop. The gourmet Annex Restaurant offers the Mediterranean-Asian fusion menu of chef Renee Rischmeyer in an atmosphere of place settings by Versace and exclusive porcelain, boasting 1 Michelin Star and 16 GaultMillau points, with its wine list overseen by the winner of the “Best Sommelier in Switzerland”. The Sparks Restaurant, awarded 15 GaultMillau points, offers traditional Swiss dining combined with a light cuisine in a trendy atmosphere underneath the sparkling candelabras of the art nouveau banquet room, while the Grape Californian Restaurant, a three minute walk from the hotel in the center of Weggis Village offer wines from the Napa Valley, specialties from around the world and features a selection of great steaks from the grill. In the warmer summer months, dine outside on the terrace with the late sunset lake views. Reserve a spot for a romantic dinner for two, right by the lake, or more privately in the wine cellar Vinothek, with the personal attention of the sommelier. Especially sumptuous, is the Lalique Caviar Bar, where surrounded by sparkling objets de crystal find a spot to rendezvous for relaxation with spectacular views over Lake Lucerne, to enjoy Zwyer Caviar, as well a large selection of cigars and malt whiskies. The Park Weggis makes an extraordinary spot for a European wedding with the Aquarius Hall banqueting room which can turn into a magical wonderland of themed colors like the Little Mermaid under water.
