HOTEL DES
TROIS COURONNES – VEVEY
Lake Geneva Views in the Lavaux Riviera
Charlie Chaplin called
Vevey in Switzerland home. His statue in the form of the “Little Tramp” stands at the lake edge looking
out to the rippling waters. On his first visits to Vevey, the silent
film star would have stayed at the “three crowns”. Set in
the heart of old town Vevey on the shores of the Lake Geneva along the
Riviera between Montreux and Lausanne, the historic Hotel Des Trois Courrones
offers delightful views of the lake and the snow-capped Alps peaks in
a luxurious hotel which has been welcoming the discerning guest, from
royalty and heads of state, to famous figures of literature and films,
since it first opened in May of 1842.
The steam cruise
ships appearing on Lake Geneva in the 19th Century began to draw tourists
to the water’s edge along the shore in the
mid-19th Century drawing enterprising hoteliers to build luxurious waterfront
hotels to accommodate the draw of wealthy visitors on the “Grand
Tour”. Well-known local hotel owner Gabriel Monnet had a small
long standing inn of the same name in the center of town on the Rue du
Simplon and when he built his new showplace hotel on the water’s
edge, transferred the name. At the time there were few hotels of its
size and grandeur to equal it, though others would follow, with the grand
lake shore palaces from Geneva to Montreux. The hotel no longer sits
directly on the lake as the city fathers built a quay along the waterfront
in 1863, but this glorious recently renovated luxury property of elegant
neo-baroque style retrains its historic La Belle Époque character
while exceeding in modern comfort and first class service.
All of the rooms and suites at the Trois Courrones are spacious and decorated
with distinct individual character. Many of the hotel rooms feature private
balconies with stunning views of Lake Geneva where the paddle steamers
still cruise past (see Lake
Geneva Cruises). Even some of the bathrooms
have balconies. Amenities include 2-line telephones, fax machines, interactive
satellite TVs with plasma screens and complimentary wireless internet
access throughout the hotel. The restaurant of the Hotel Des Trois Couronnes
with its grand promenade panoramic terrace offers a refined offering
of Mediterranean and classic
French cuisine in a romantic setting with the shimmering lake in the
background. Enjoy the live piano music in the Veranda Bar. The hotel’s
Puressens Spa offers a broad range of pampering wellness treatments and
massages, featuring the finest products and techniques in a setting both
beautiful and intimate. The spa features an indoor swimming pool with
aqua-music suffusing underwater, a jacuzzi, steam bath, sauna, and fitness
room. Spa guests can partake of light and healthy snacks in the Asian
themed Spa Lounge
The
Hotel Des Trois Courrones is located opposite the history museum of Vevey
with its fascinating collection of locks and odes to the city’s
famous traditional wine festival. Vevey is surrounded by the hillside
wine vineyards
of the Lavaux, where the wine train departs daily for the short trip
into ancient monastic vineyards which line the lake shore (see Lavaux
Wine Terraces). Also
worth a visit in Vevey are the Aliamentarium in the one-time mansion
headquarters
of
Nestle
Condensed Milk Company and their innovation of milk-chocolate (see Aliamentarium
Food Museum). Vevey and the Hotel Des Trois Couronnes are 45 minutes
from Geneva by train. © Bargain
