Classic Historic Old Town Luxury on the Rhine
The
Les Trois Rois Hotel of Basel is one of the oldest city hotels of Europe
and a charming
example
of the golden age, updated into a fresh
5 Star Deluxe world class grand hotel. First appearing as a traveler’s
inn on the banks of the Rhine River in 1681, the current shape of the
classic hotel which has hosted artists, politicians and potentates, dates
from 1844 with a design by architect Amadeus Merian. Though many a royal
personage has stayed within its walls, the “Three Kings” of
the name actually refers to the Biblical three wise men. The idea of
traveling kings inspired the naming of many a European inn along the
byways of old, but few attained the reputation and longevity of this
historic luxury hotel in the heart of Basel. The three kings from the
1754 earlier incarnation stand above the entrance in the façade,
and over the main staircase up from the chandelier atrium lobby.
The Grand Hotel Les
Trois Rois has hosted the likes of Queen Elizabeth II and Elizabeth
Taylor,
Prince Rainier of Monaco, Pablo Picasso and
Thomas Mann, Voltaire and the Rolling Stones. In 2004 the property was
taken over by Basel entrepreneur Dr. Thomas Straumann, completely renovated
to modern standards sparing no expense to restore the 1844 building under
the guidance of Basel Architect Christian Lang. With 101 rooms and suites,
some with balcony views of the Rhine, designed in a neo-classical meets
art-deco style, furnished with genuine antiques and works of art, a 2
Michelin star gourmet restaurant and an award winning mixology bar, the
Trois Rois is worthy of its impressive heritage. Located at the river’s
edge in the heart of the Old Town, next to the historic Middle Bridge
of Basel, and adjacent to the Schifflande cruise dock landing, the hotel
makes for a stunning base to explore Switzerland’s most cosmopolitan
city bounded by the meeting of three countries.
Rooms & Suites
In
the spacious Double Rooms, the natural light meets with the colors
of woods and cloth to
offer
tranquility and mood. The Herzl Room is a
stylish junior suite with a breath of world history. This is the room
where Theodor Herzl stayed in 1897, whose writings laid the foundation
for the State of Israel a hundred years later, and for a bit more connection
to history, the Napoleon Suite is fit for an emperor. Napoleon didn’t
actually sleep there, but he did stay at the earlier incarnation of
the hotel in 1797 for a state occasion while reshaping Europe. Gallery
paintings
and wall stuccos harken back to the Napoleonic era, especially in the
corner salon with its painted relief medallions. The Le Trois Rois
Suite offers a glorious two bedrooms, three bathrooms, a sitting room
and its
own private rooftop open-air Jacuzzi and sauna.
Restaurants
The Gourmet Restaurant Cheval Blanc, awarded 2 Michelin Stars, and
its chef Peter Knogl named Gault Millau 2011 “Chef of the Year”,
takes its name from wines of from the Château Cheval Blanc and
features his signature haute cuisine, surrounded by muted mural motifs,
taking the diner on a culinary journey of the sun dappled inspirations
of the Mediterranean. The Chez Donati is located a few steps from the
hotel itself, celebrating the flavors of the Italian Piedmont Region,
a top choice rendezvous of Basel’s artists and connoisseurs for
50 years on. The Bar Les Trois Rois is the spot where Basel meets. Winner
of the “Hotel Bar of the Year Award” and Mixology Bar Award
of 2012, the bar lounge at the three kings is famous for its cocktails,
in winter, relaxing in front of a crackling fire in the classic oak and
leather, or summer on the terrace with views of vibrant life along the
Rhine. You can even rent a bartender for special occasions, the
Swiss Champion Mixologist Thomas Huhn, will create classic inspired cocktails
