Tyrolean Tradition and Italian Style
The Grand Hotel Europa
in Innsbruck has an illustrious history as the elegant accommodation
of
royalty and celebrities in the Tyrolean capitol.
Built in 1869 as a royal guest residence with design additions by the
architects of Bavaria’s “mad” King Ludwig II. Completely
renovated in 2009-10, the only 5-star hotel in the city mixes the gilded
age with modern Italian design and old Alps Tyrol tradition in one package.
The hotel has greeted illustrious guests from King Ludwig II and Queen
Elizabeth II to the Rolling Stones and Sting. The Grand Hotel Europa
was the central location during two Winter Olympics held in Innsbruck,
and even General Patton made the hotel his headquarters for a brief time
at the end of the war.
Located conveniently across from Innsbruck’s main train station,
the exterior of the Europa is not as impressive than others of its class,
looking rather like a corner storefront, much due to its reconstruction
after a fire in 1945. The Grand Hotel Europa features 108 rooms and 7
luxury suites furnished in splendid style, many with marble bathrooms
and Oriental carpets. The Europa’s royal past is recalled with
hallways adorned by portraits of the last Habsbourg emperor and you can
even find a Kaiserberg Wine served in the restaurant. In keeping with
its setting on the pass route between the Alps of Austrian Tyrol and
Italy, the Europa offers a choice of stay in the original classic rooms
of Tyrolean atmosphere or the updated wing of sleek modern Italian design.
Many of the rooms offer large windows with views of the surrounding Alpine
landscape. Of the inviting and comfortable public areas and lobby, the
hotel’s pride is the “Barock Saal”, the Baroque ballroom
designed by the architects of King Ludwig who also worked on his fantasy
castle at Neuschwanstein.
The
Grand Hotel Europa offers the dining experience of the world class restaurant,
the Europa Stüberl, featuring the multiple award-winning
cuisine of Chef Roland Geisberger, presenting superlative culinary variety
with seasonal dishes of regional and international flair. The restaurant
in cozy and inviting Tyrolean style is divided into various “Stuben” or
parlors. The Alte Stube with 200 year old illustrated wooden paneling
and ornaments, the modern Weinstube, wine room, the Philippine Welser
Stube or the Andreas Hofer Stube, all which radiate the typical Alpine
charm and a homey atmosphere. The newly designed Europa Bar off the lobby
welcomes hotel guests and locals throughout the day from the morning’s
first espresso, to an afternoon respite from shopping or sightseeing,
or an evening tete-a-tete
cocktail nightcap. The Europa Bar makes for the convenient central meeting
place at Grand Hotel Europa for a drink or a light meal with the sleek
lounge design equaling the light Mediterranean gastronomic menu of antipasti,
risotto with summer truffles, or beef filet.
The attractions and shops of Innsbruck are all within a 15-minute walk.
The Hofkirche and the Golden Roof are around the corner, and with the
newly modernized Hungerburg Tramway and Nordkettenbahn aerial cable starting
from the town center, the mountain peaks and scenic panoramas can be
reached with a 20 minute cable car ride where the hiking trails and ski
areas as well as the nearby Stubai Glacier offer a contrast to the Inn
River Valley. Several golf courses set in the midst of splendid alpine
nature are easily accessible such as Igls, Rinn, Mieming or Seefeld.
The lobby of the hotel directly connects to the train station and parking
lot though its own tunnel to avoid the weather and the local ski bus
in winter stops in front of the hotel. The Grand Hotel Europa offers
a number of special packages from romantic weekends, sightseeing, to
a Casino and Dinner arrangement. © Bargain
